A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide has returned N650 million she allegedly received ahead of the 2015 election.
Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday revealed before the Federal High Court in Lagos that former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide, returned N650 million she allegedly received ahead of the 2015 election.
According to The Nation, she was arraigned along with a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in Oyo State, Olanrewaju Otiti, a chief, a former Senator representing Oyo Central Ayo Adeseun and a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is said to be at large.
The EFCC accused them of conspiring to directly take possession of N650 million, which they reasonably ought to have known was part of proceeds of an unlawful act and without going through a financial institution.
An EFCC investigator Usman Zakari, while testifying in a trial-within-trial to determine the truthfulness of the defendants’ statements, said his team received N10 million bank draft from Akinjide’s husband, Aliyu Pategi, out of the N650 million traced to her and others.
He said another team headed by Shuaibu Shehu received N640 million from Akinjide in a related case.
While being cross-examined by Akinjide’s lawyer, Chief Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), the witness said the N10 million deposit payment was not the condition upon which Akinjide was released.
He said: “On August 9, 2016, the first defendant (Akinjide) and her husband, Hon. Aliyu Pategi, were present throughout. I did not ask Pategi to make payment to ensure the release of the first defendant.”
Zakari said Pategi stood surety for Akinjide when she was granted administrative bail.
“On August 10, 2016, he volunteered a Sterling Bank draft of N10 million on behalf of his wife as part payment of the N650 million that was traced to her and her co-accused.
“The N10 million was paid by the first defendant’s husband on her behalf and the remaining N640 million has not been paid,” Zakari said.
When reminded by Ayorinde that the balance has been paid, Zakari said: “I am aware that the sum of N640 million was received from the first defendant in Stanbic IBTC Bank draft in another case investigated by a team tagged, HOPST, which was headed by one Shuaibu Shehu.”

President Buhari has expressed his reservations about the call for restructuring which has dominated the Nigerian political discussions.
President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday observed that those clamouring for the restructuring of the country do so for selfish motives but expressed the hope that the diverse agenda can be accommodated by the constitution.
He made the observation while receiving some traditional rulers under Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) and members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) from Urhobo land at the presidential villa, Abuja on Monday.
He was responding to the call by the group to consider the call for restructuring.
The president said: “You mentioned something which is typical these days, the cause of restructuring Nigeria. For every group asking for restructuring has got their own agenda and I hope it can be accommodated by the constitution.
“I assure you that you are not forgotten and I am pleased you appreciate the appointments by this administration of some citizens of your kingdoms.
Responding to a request for the presidency to also address oil spillage in the region, Buhari blamed the people of the area for what he said was their contribution to the degradation of the region through sabotage.
He, therefore, urged them to give the present administration the chance just as, according to him, gave the previous governments the chance.
Buhari said: “I plead with you leaders of these communities that your resources have been sustaining this country throughout these years for restraint of control so that the cooperation you gave to the previous administrations will be extended to this administration so that the country can realize the resources which are mainly under your seat.
“Some of your citizens there are responsible and they hurt, more of your people that have access to employment, either lack of education, you know as much as I do that it is the people that suffer from oil pollution, like those engaged in fishing.
“If the water is polluted, it is the majority of the people that will suffer.
“Those making noise in the media because they somehow have access and because they are outside the country, but those of us who are stuck here we are left to convince the people to show respect.”
The President General of UPU had also observed that part of the things that will guarantee a second tenure for Buhari is to appoint an Urhobo son or daughter as substantive Minister in the current administration.
Taiga requested the president to look into issues bedevilling the region, especially the resuscitation of Sapele port, boundary crisis between the Urhobos and Edo communities, federal presence like the establishment of gas plants, adequate funding of Federal University of Petroleum Resources and neglect by oil companies who daily exploit the land without commensurate compensation.
He said: “We wish to commend the initiative by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to give serious thought to restructuring our country and going as far as setting up a committee under a serving governor to take a critical look at it and make recommendations on the way forward.
“We humbly request Mr. President to give kind consideration to appointing an Urhobo son or daughter as a Minister in this administration. We will be grateful if this request is kindly granted.
“The Sapele port which was once a bustling economic hub in the old Midwestern region has unfortunately gone comatose for a long time. It is presently used as a naval facility with only a small part of it serving the Navy’s needs.
“We, therefore, request the federal government to reactivate and make the port functional. This will help to decongest the Lagos ports and boost the economy of Delta and neighbouring states.”
Meanwhile, security operatives in presidential villa prevented Delta APC leader, Olorogun Ortega Emerhor who organized the Urhobo delegation’s visit to the president, from entering the venue.
His prevention from attending the meeting with the president may not be unconnected with the violence that broke out during the APC national convention at Eagle Square, Abuja on Saturday.
His loyalists and other Delta delegates loyal to the camp of Chief Great Ogboru and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege disrupted the president’s address when they engaged in a free for all fight.

Photos have emerged, showing the shocking state of some IDPs in the north-eastern Nigerian town of Dikwa in Borno state.
The IDPs shelter in the open
According to a report by Daily Post, as many as over 4,000 displaced women, children and men in the north-eastern Nigerian town of Dikwa are sheltering in the open, while being screened by the Nigerian Army after fleeing military operations in the area.
Cheick Ba, Country Director, Norwegian Refugee Council, said this in a statement made available to Daily Post on Tuesday.
The agency also released images of Nigerians- refugees, sitting on the ground in clusters, while some move about with their luggage.
“We’re extremely concerned by the dire living conditions of families in Dikwa who’ve recently fled military operations”, Ba said.
“Children are sleeping outside with nothing over their heads. With the rains now hitting the area, they risk becoming sick with malaria, diarrhoea or typhoid,” he added.
The statement noted that aid agencies were overwhelmed as hundreds of displaced people arrive to Dikwa every day, after fleeing Mallam Kari village in Bama and other neighbouring communities, due to hostilities between the Nigerian Army and armed opposition groups.
“Before being allowed to settle in new towns, the new arrivals undergo a screening conducted by the military”, it continued.
“Over 600 displaced people are currently being kept in an unused roofless gas station while waiting to be screened by the army.
“Some 4,000 others already screened are being held at a reception centre before being given temporary shelters. But the centre is full to the brink, forcing families to sleep outside.
“It is common to see up to 15 women cramped in a single room while the men sleep outdoors.
“The military report that it takes an average of two weeks to clear the displaced people. However, last year the same exercise took as long as one year in cases when the army claimed women were wives of Boko Haram insurgents.”
The arrivals have put pressure on the lives of the host community.
Kachalla Isa, the head of the community, said “Our schools have been turned into camps for displaced families and our children can’t access education. This worries me a lot”.
The agency added that only three of the eight schools in Dikwa are functional. Four schools are housing displaced people, while the army is using one as a military base.
“NRC has so far built over 1,300 temporary homes for the new arrivals, and plans to build more shelters and toilet facilities in the coming weeks”, it added.
Policemen in Lagos state have successfully arrested a gang of notorious car snatchers terrorizing residents of the state.
The suspected criminals after they were caught
The Lagos state police command has arrested seven suspects in connection with car snatching and ‘one-chance’ robbery operations have confessed their individual involvement in the alleged criminal activities.

Police recovered a Toyota Camry car without a registration number, one toy gun and various SIM cards.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Edgal Imohimi, who paraded the suspects, said on 16th of June, 2018, information was received from a credible source indicating that some group of dare-devil armed robbers with operational base in Ogun State and specialises in snatching cars at gunpoint as well as robbing passengers in commercial buses otherwise known as one-chance and thereafter brings their loot to Lagos sale were operating.
“Armed with this intelligence, an ambush was laid for them by the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad operatives and conventional policemen from the command, leading to the arrest of the suspects.”
Confessing to the crimes when Daily Independent interviewed the suspects, Sunday Solomon, an Urhobo from Delta State and resident of Ikorodu confessed thus: “Police arrested me because I am doing the one-chance robbery.
“We normally operate at Iyana- Ipaja axis of Lagos. I joined the gang about a year ago. We operate by packing our commercial bus and one of us will be calling passengers, when we pick the passengers, along the road, we will ask them to surrender their money and phones. I have realized about N160,000 in one of the operations. I have operated with the gang not less than 20 times. I use the money for the upkeep of my three children.
For Emmanuel Olusegun, a native of Abeokuta in Ogun state and resident of Sango area of the state claimed to be an Engineer by profession, confessed to being a member of the gang, saying that involvement was as a buyer of stolen phones from one of the gang members.
“It was Ade that normally brings the phones to me. They used to rob and collect the phones from victims. Initially, I did not know that the phones they were bringing to me were stolen items. But when l later came to know, I did not do anything but continue to patronize them.
Abayomi Adebisi, 42, a native of Abeokuta, Ogun State, married with three children said: “I was arrested because of robbery. We are three in number. We pick passengers, collect their belongings and drop them off. I have realized not less than N600,000 from robbery operations. We don’t normally go every day, but I have participated up to 40 times.
It was circumstances that led me to robbery. I was duped. And I had no other alternative. I am a building contractor."
Matthew Ogaba, married with a child said, “I am from Benue State, police arrested me because a brother of mine told me there was a vehicle for sale, and that I should help look for the buyer but I never knew it was a stolen vehicle. I got people to buy and they negotiated. The day they were to come and pay and collect the car, I was arrested. I don’t accompany them to rob. My involvement is that I connect the buyer”.
Emmanuel Ogaba, from Benue who said he is a launderer by profession and a resident of Sango in Ogun State said the police arrested him because his family friend called to inform him that he had a car for sale. I have never been involved in the robbery
The story has been told of the Nigerian man who reportedly went into armed robbery just to raise to start his own church.
According to a report by Vanguard, a 41-year-old suspect, identified as Fidelis Nelson (aka MP), and leader of dare-devil robbery gang operating within Lagos and Ogun states, has revealed that he went into robbery to raise money to build his church.
According to Nelson, a father of three, who spoke with Vanguard, “I have a pastoral calling; unfortunately I don’t have money to start my church. I have had the calling for years, but no finance to make it a reality.”
Nelson, who has masterminded several robbery operations, also noted that he and members of his gang carried out three robbery operations recently.“We actually snatched three cars last month,” he added.
Vanguard gathered that the gang met their waterloo on June 16, after the Police received information indicating that some robbers, who specialised in snatching cars in Ogun State, were bringing their loots to Lagos for sale, then laid ambush for them.
The suspects, identified as Emmanuel Ogaba aka Tablet, 45; Matthew Ogaba, 30; Fidelis Nelson aka MP, 41; Augustine Stanley, 31; Abayomi Adebisi, 42, and Emmanuel Olusegun, 37, were arrested in Lagos.
Recovered from the suspects are one Toyota Camry car, one toy gun and various SIM cards.
The gang leader, Nelson, said: “I am married with three kids. I am a professional driver. My wife doesn’t know that I am into robbery.
“Since my colleagues are denying that none of them holds the toy gun during operations, I take responsibility for everything. I am the one that held the gun and drove at the same time during operations.
“I was the one who introduced Augustine into the gang. I had plans that when I establish my church, he would head the musical department because he is a talented gospel artiste.”
According to Augustine, the other suspect who is from Abia State, “I am a gospel artiste; I perform at crusades, weddings and other social events.
“I met Nelson during a crusade programme. He told me that he loved my performance and that he would love to invest in my musical career.

A total of atleast 320 military personnel, comprising 262 from the Nigerian Army, 44 from the Nigerian Navy and 14 from the Nigerian Air Force have voluntarily bowed out of the Armed Forces.
According to Daily Sun, the personnel dropped their arms after 6-month skill acquisition and entrepreneurial training at the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC), Oshodi, Lagos.
While bidding them farewell, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, urged them to continue to contribute their quota towards surmounting threats to lives and property within their domiciled area.
“You will have to prove in your relationships that you have passed through a highly disciplined system such as the military.

The CDS said he had no doubt that the training they have passed through at the Centre would expose them to several entrepreneurial and management skills that would help mitigate the envisaged pitfalls as well as living a stress free life in retirement.
“Let me use this opportunity to intimate you that the Defence Headquarters recently organised a workshop with the aim of harmonising all armed forces veterans associations.
